9 Insect Trait Options

Choice is important when it comes to seed corn selection. Each acre has slightly different needs and those needs can vary widely across the Burrus Seed footprint. Growers in Missouri have different insect concerns than those in southern Wisconsin. Because of this, our lineup includes 9 different insect trait options for protection. Traits are differentiated by the letter(s) at the end of each hybrid’s name.

Burrus Hybrid Naming

Below is a breakdown of the naming convention used for Burrus and Power Plus® brand corn hybrids.

BRAND – Our corn lineup features two brands. Burrus is our flagship brand carrying technologies accessed through licenses with Bayer CropScience and Syngenta. Power Plus® is our distributorship brand granting deeper access into the Corteva portfolio.

RELATIVE MATURITY – The first two numbers of each name are determined by the variety’s relative maturity. To calculate, multiply the first number by 2 and add 100. The second number (or third character) identifies whether the hybrid falls on the low end (1 – 4) or high end (5 – 9) of the maturity range. The product in our example is on the lower end of the 102 day maturity range [1 x 2 = 2 + 100 = 102].

PRODUCT CATEGORY – The third number (or fourth character) represents the hybrid category it falls under. Conventional hybrids end in 0, hybrids with above and below ground insect protection end in 1 – 4 and products with above only insect protection end in 5 – 9. The one exception to the rule in this year’s lineup is Power Plus 2Y06AM which is actually in the above and below ground protection category.
